Welcome January! Is anyone else feeling the need to refresh and update the look of your space so we can start this year with an uplifting ambiance? Well, I am feeling exactly like that and I already made some changes in my home. It is winter here, we get less sunshine, the sky is usually gray and the surface is covered in snow. Days are shorter and energy is not as high. If you want to refresh the look of your home, bring some happy colours inside and a new updated look, follow these four easy steps and they will transform the atmosphere! They are very easy and I’m sure you will feel the difference in a instant.

➊ Start with the walls. Walls are like blank canvas just waiting to be the focal point. You don’t need to go buy a expensive artwork. There are affordable ways to make your walls look great. You can:
✦ Frame a beautiful wrapping paper (Frames are very inexpensive at Walmart and Ikea)
✦ Hang pictures of the places you have been
✦ Hang an oversized antique or new world map
✦ Get a canvas artwork at places such as Homesense, Winners, Target or Marshalls

It is much affordable to buy just the covers instead of the whole pillow. In some places, you can buy your own fabric and get a seamstress to make your own custom pillow covers for a very good price. Follow your instinct and style, be bold be creative and never be afraid!

If you are not a big fan of fresh flowers or flowers at all you can go for a nice real or fake greenery. Bringing a little of the nature inside is a must for a balanced space.

✦ Sea shells you got at the beach (If they are too small, place them in a nice glass bow).
✦ Memorable pictures in vintage or unique frames (Thrift stores are the best place for that).
✦ A sculpture you got somewhere you went and loved it.
✦ Candles/Candle holders you got as a gift or you just bought it because you love the smell.
✦ A cute vase you got from from someone in the family or a trip to a thrift store (Thrift stores are the best place for that).
✦ If you haven’t hung a world map on the walls you can also use a nice globe as an accessory.
✦ BOOKS! They are not only good for reading – they are also good for decorating!

    1. That’s amazing Eri, I love paintings! I believe I have more than 40 originals and I just never get tired of admiring them. I wish I could paint but that is not my forte! I’m happy you have that talent =)

  1. “Hang an oversized antique or new world map” – this is something I want to do since a long time ago!! I think it’ll really change the look-feel of a room to become more sophisticated.. 😀

  2. Lucky to come across your article because I am thinking of how to spruce up our library room. I already have books and a big world map. Glad that my daughter is taking up painting so her works are a welcome decor and conversation pieces. – Fred

  3. This is so timely, Nanda. I was just thinking about sprucing up our house – with my room and our living room as top priority. I was thinking of changing the color of our walls or using wallpaper to give ’em a fresh look.

  4. Thank you for sharing this. I’m planning to change the look of my room and these tips gave me additional idea how to decorate it. I totally forgot how pillows would add up to the style I want. 🙂
